Description
My spiritual light sunset over Presili mountains oil pastel painting was achieved in one sitting with oil pastels on card. It was painted from the hills above Llandygwydd near Cardigan and looking over towards Fishguard not that the latter town could be seen from this viewpoint.
The light in the sky of my painting is a faithful reproduction of the sky I saw during one evening in July. Some artistic licence was used though to portray the Preseli mountains and terrain before them.
Including these mountains was more of an afterthought as all I wanted to do was to paint the sky and capture its intensity.
But quite often a darker object or mountains in this case, before or below a lighter one, such as the dying sun, makes the lighter object seemingly brighter and more intense. So that is why I included the mountains or hills as they should be called.
Initially, I was attracted by the different sky colours and especially the intensity of the yellows, whites and orange and how these faded into the blue sky above.
The sky seemed to have a certain depth to it and I liked that characteristic too. The darker sunset coloured clouds that were passing over added to the painting’s depth and they certainly helped to make the painting come alive.
Overall, the sky scene I saw appeared to have a spiritual light emanating from it. And using oil pastels as opposed to chalk pastels helped to replicate this light better.
Blending oil pastels though is a slower process as it needs to be done carefully. Blending too many colours at once will produce an unwanted muddy effect that may be impossible to remove without trace.
Mistakes can be hard to rectify and can ruin a painting. Also once oil pastel is applied to a card or paper support, it stains immediately and is usually impossible to remove with any real success. My preference for using card with oil pastels is that card doesn’t buckle or rip during faster blending techniques.
All the techniques described above were used to paint my Spiritual Light Sunset Over Preseli Mountains painting.
But rather than standing outside the whole time and being pestered by flying insects I painted the approximate colours for the whole sky scene very quickly and then retreated back to my studio some 200 yards away.
I could still see the same vista from my studio and so I finished this painting from indoors. From start to finish it took about four hours.
