Description
Painting New Quay harbour with blue boats in Cerdigion was an on the spur of the moment painting and made with a limited palette of colours; various shades of intense blue being the most prominent, as you can see.
New Quay is a seaside town along Cardigan Bay. It is near Aberaeron in Ceredigion (Cardiganshire), Wales and a few miles off the A487 coastal road. It is actually situated on the A486 road.
No under drawing was made and no sketches were done either. I painted it straight off and with very few adjustments in order to keep it fresh and spontaneous. This resulted in a quick and loose style to capture its then bright day.
The composition shows a collection of local boats moored in New Quay’s harbour. At the time of painting the tide was going out hence seeing pools of water on its sandy floor and people walking around on the wet sand to check on their respective boats.
Also, you can see a dark blue Landrover towing a boat on a sand bank in the middle right of the painting. Other boats, mostly yachts, can be seen in the bay. On the quay side you can see many people too and going about their business.
The distant coastal cliffs shown at the top half of this painting lead, from right to left, to Llanon, Llanrhystud and eventually on to Aberystwyth.
Despite the quickness of painting this colourful picture, I added quite a lot of specific detail such as mooring ropes, anchor lines, buoys, outboard engines plus some quay side ladders and posts.
These details added to the instant charm of this art work. Other paint marks were made to illustrate the brick work along the quay and harbour walls and on the grey rocks at the harbour entrance.
A couple of brushes were used along with a painting knife - the edge was used to make a straight line for the yacht masts. Acrylic paint was used solely to make this painting on canvas stretched and glued to a panel. Prior to painting the support was sized with gesso and left to dry over a couple of days.
No sooner had I just finished this painting, than it was sold to a visiting tourist from London and who collected see-side art. He kept in touch and has since framed this picture in the traditional way.
