Description
Nestling in the foothills of the Cambrian Mountains in Mid West Wales, you will find Cellan and which is quite close to the market town of Lampeter. This particular Cardiganshire countryside view painting was commissioned by the son of a local resident as a birthday present for his recently retired father.
The scene captures the late afternoon Autumn sun quite well. It was painted using acrylic paint on stretched canvas.
Cellan is situated on the B4343 Cellan road and this can be found on the first left turning along the A482 just after leaving Lampeter town and which is also known as Pont Steffan in Welsh. The Cellan road runs parallel to the Afon Teifi river on route to Llanfair and along the back road leading to Llandewi Brefi and Tregaron.
The Southern view point for this painting was from a private farmyard on a hill and which overlooks the river Teifi. I was given permission to sketch and take photographs from the farmer in order to complete my commission.
Most of the artwork was completed in my art studio as it was far too cold to paint outside despite it being a sunny day. Painting outside in cold weather not only plays havoc with your hands and fingers but also with acrylic paints too. Often it can be difficult to squeeze paint out of its tube if it is cold.
Within the painting you can see a few remote houses and barns along with small green fields plus a lot of trees on a hilly incline. The bright late Autumn sun made interesting shadows from the the tall trees and which I painted in. This helped to bring the painting more alive. Similarly, the sun light on the recently ploughed fields on the right of the painting enhanced the drab earth colouring to a pale yellow and orange colouring.
The trees still had some leaves on them although most were of a brown colouring as the painting was done just on the cusp of Autumn and Winter. A few deciduous trees still retained their natural dark green colouring. You can see these towards the middle left and close to a few white buildings.
You can see more trees in the form of distant woodlands and forests on the horizon of the Cambrian Mountains towards the back of the painting and just below the partially clouded blue sky.
