Description
Looking into the mid centre distance of my popular English Bluebell Flower Fairy Picture and best print selling watercolour, you should see the dancing fairy that appeared without any conscious effort from me. She seemingly just manifested as I was finishing this wild flower painting. She could be a dancing ballerina.
Can you spot the fairy yet? You can see that she is standing or dancing on tiptoes with her arms thrust straight above her. Her dress can be seen clearly too and this seems to be billowing as part of her dance movement. Although she looks like an impression, she does look as though she could be moving. Her captured pose suggests this.
My sole intention for this British bluebell painting was to capture the beautiful shimmering blue and purple colours with large swatches of green foliage and all accentuated by natural afternoon sunlight; and to make it look as real as possible albeit with the limitations of watercolour paint. I had no intention of painting in anything else and especially not fairies nor ballerinas.
So I was quite surprised to see this addition. I like it and so I left her in this wild flower watercolour painting.
It’s quite rare for me to paint in watercolour too as I prefer the thicker pigments of acrylic or oil paints. This English bluebell painting took many hours to do as it is built from many layers of watercolour pigment; with each layer taking its time to dry. Some colours take longer to dry than others.
As a result of drying times, the bluebell fairy picture was actually painted over a series of consecutive days. The watercolour paper had to be bone dry before the next layer of paint could be applied. Painting on top of an existing wet or partially dry layer would have muddied the colours and ruined it.
Some artists use additives to their paint mixes but my preference is to not do this regardless of the artistic medium I’m using.
The English bluebell scene is real. It was painted at West Woods, Lockeridge - near Marlborough in Wiltshire, England UK. It’s a private woodland that is open to the public for two Sundays each year during the bluebell season with this being about mid May.
The original painting was framed under picture glass and subsequently sold soon after. I retained the copyright though in order to continue selling prints of it from this site.
