Description
Great Bedwyn is a quiet hamlet in East Wiltshire, England. It is situated between Hungerford and Marlborough and lies on the edge of Savernake Forest. I used to live nearby and I would drive through this landscape painting composition on almost a daily basis. And along the small single track road shown on the right too. You can see it meandering past more fields to the horizon and disappearing seemingly into the blue sky.
The scene is under one mile away from the village of Great Bedwyn. It is pronounced as Gurt Beddin by the locals. Not many people visit because it is hidden away in its quiet countryside and somewhat off the beaten track. Those that do visit might arrive by boat on the river Dun that flows adjacent to the village or by train - if not by tractor, car, bus, horse or on foot.
Within my painting, wheat and barley fields are shown mainly together with a recently rolled green field. On the left and in the distance by the blue skyline there’s a distant woodland and preceding that there is a dusty ploughed field with a pinkish earth colouring.
The fields in this part of the World are particularly big and stretch over many acres of fertile land.
The view captured in this painting is from the top of a small hill and looking Eastwards. Close by and only about 200 yards to the West is the privately owned Wilton Windmill. It is not shown in the picture. I had my back to it as I was painting my Great Bedwyn Wheat Fields Picture during 1993.
A limited palette of Artist quality oil pastels were used on a prepared card to paint this colourful abstract painting.
Many people love the intense colouring I used and especially the blended blue for the sky. This is why I continue to offer to sell its printed merchandise. It was once used to accompany a published poem written by someone else.
Great Bedwyn is signposted from the A4 road between Hungerford and Marlborough but the best route to take to find my painting’s view is from the A338 from Hungerford. The turning will be on the right and just past a turning on the left to the Wiltshire village of Shalbourne. There will not be much road traffic whatever time of day you visit. The whole area has some lovely walks.
