Description
My acrylic painting on stretched canvas of Cors Caron shows a view close to the designated board walk exit of this National nature reserve; situated near the ancient drover's town of Tregaron in the foothills of the Cambrian mountains in Wales. Cors Caron is sometimes referred as Tregaron Bog.
Visitors can walk on designated paths on the nature reserve itself. Some lead to purposely built bird watching huts made from local wood. The land itself is believed to be Europe’s oldest peat bog.
You can still see square holes in the peat where slabs of the peat, for fuel usage, were cut out and carted away in days gone by. The foreground water in my painting sits in such a man-made peat extraction hole.
The scenery is breathtaking and reminiscent of an Africa Savannah plain in parts and particularly with the wild horses and cows grazing in the long bleached grass. The colours can be quite striking.
The bleached yellow ochre and raw umber grasses really stand out adjacent to lush green fields and hills as shown in my painting.
I walk my dog around the area a few times a year. To one side of the protected area is a walking and cycling track that was once a railway line. On the actual protected area, a part of which is shown within my painting, there are designated wooden pathways to protect the natural environment and the wild life; including snakes such as the venomous adder.
Some areas look extremely boggy and there are seemingly millions of large ankle-busting tufts of grass to hamper your way if you stray off the pathway. The area is patrolled by wardens.
Tregaron bog is not small but vast in size by British standards although it is a bit difficult to see where its boundaries start and end as the surrounding countryside is equally as beautiful albeit different and it all seems to blend in a ragged sort of way.
Fortunately, Cors Caron never seems to be overrun with tourists possibly because it is off the beaten track and there are no real facilities for tourists except for a small free car park.
This particular water painting was achieved “alla prima” and all on a chilly New Year’s day!
