Description
This coloured illustration of St. David's College campus at Lampeter, Ceredigion, Wales was drawn initially with pen and black waterproof ink on paper. Caran D’ache’s artist crayons were used to colour it.
St. David’s college is part of the University of Wales. Locally it is often referred as Lampeter Univesity.
Dry colour was applied throughout the picture with the exception of the sky where watercolour was used and taken from a Cobalt blue crayon; by dampening its pigment with a small wet brush and by applying quickly the diluted colour to the paper and with the same brush. Once dry, the same blue crayon was applied lightly in a dry state over the top to produce more depth and to compliment all other coloured pencil strokes.
The white part of the clouds were made by leaving the paper blank. The darkened area of the clouds and which make them appear to have body and movement were first painted with a watercolour tint of light grey and then later, once these were bone dry, they were over-layered with a dry Cobalt blue tint. The tint was achieved by only using a slight hand pressure.
A forest and hill are seen in the far distance on the right hand side of the composition and about halfway up. These were coloured in dry media.
The painting was an experiment in making an illustration look rather like a photo but allowing it to be still an obvious illustration.
Although many diversified subjects may be read at this old Grade 2 listed university building, it seems to continue to be a place where clergy study Theology and similar disciplines. It is the smallest university within the UK and perhaps, Europe. It was founded in 1822 and given its own royal charter six years later.
Within the St. David’s building illustrated are a number of lecture rooms and common rooms as well as administrative offices and student residential accommodation. In addition there are three main areas with these being The Old Hall - originally the refectory, The Founder’s library - now replaced by a more modern one and St. David’s chapel - consecrated during 1827. Many other university buildings exist on this campus.
