Description
Tenby is a harbour town on the Western side of Carmarthen Bay in South Pembrokeshire, Wales.
In Welsh, Tenby is known as Dinbych-y-Pysgod. Its literal translation is "Little Town of the Fishes" or "Little Fortress of the Fish". The latter term seems quite apt as much of the old town is still enclosed behind medieval castle walls from the 13th Century. There are Venetian influences too from the 15th Century.
It is a great seaside town to visit whatever the season and as proven by its popularity during the Summer months and especially in August as this month generally handles the highest concentration of visiting tourists.
Tenby is one of my favourite coastal and harbour towns to visit and to paint. I used to go to primary school a few hundred yards from this scene as I lived in a nearby village.
In the foreground of my artwork you can see people on the small harbour beach with the tide being out plus an ancient blue house along with a chapel sandwiched between it and the harbour wall. In addition, you can see St. Julian’s Church plus silhouetted storage buildings behind it.
The multi-coloured background houses are located along Bridge Street and which sweeps around to take you further into the painting under the castle archway and around the promontory and which overlooks part of a second and much bigger North beach.
Although it is a small painting I wanted to include as much detail as I could hence being able to see more people milling around above the harbour walls at the Castle Square and Pier Hill. And with a selection of pleasure and fishing boats in the harbour.
I accentuated all colours within my painting from their true colouring because that is how I like to paint. Of course much of Tenby has changed since my time there during the 1960’s although the infrastructure of its buildings are still about the same.
I painted this Tenby Harbour painting in artist’s acrylic on a small panel and I did so in a quirky style to reflect the ambience I experienced at the time. All sea is shown. None of it is blue sky. My view point and composition chosen would not allow the sky to be included on the chosen size of panel.
The lifeboat station I have painted is the old one. Beyond that you can just see a fishing boat.
Other paintings of Tenby which I have done are available and three are shown on this site including this one.
