Description
My Cambrian Mountains Welsh Art Landscapes painting was created with artist’s acrylic paints on rectangular stretched canvas. It shows a distant view of the Cambrian Mountains with hills in front as seen from the B4342 road to Tregaron and Pontrydfendigaid and some miles past the turning for Llangeitho.
Between the colourful green hills and the distant greyed out mountains, the Strata Florida Abbey trail starts - towards the left and top of the painting.
I live close by to this painted scene. Often I have to drive this route to get to Tregaron. The passing fields from a driving perspective are quite picturesque and remind me of the sort of pictures I would expect to see in a 1950 illustrated children’s picture book about the Welsh countryside.
The fields are varied and small and with only a few houses for miles around. Some fields are much wetter than others too and a lot of marsh grass can be seen growing in such fields. In addition, some fields have remained unmanaged for many years.
These are easy to identify because you will see many mounds of old grass where new growth eventually falls to become old growth and so each mound or large tuft of grass increases in size, year on year. You can see a few of these sorts of fields in my painting.
The frequent rain storms and showers help to keep the fields in different shades of green.
Most of the fields are used for sheep and cattle grazing and for horses. Only a few fields are used in these Welsh landscape parts for agricultural and crop growing purposes.
For once the sky was blue albeit with quite a lot of cloud moving westwards and towards me. The clouds seemed to fragment into interesting shapes as they came over the top of the Cambrian mountains. By the time they were virtually overhead from where I was standing, they had broken up even more and some had disappeared completely.
I painted this picture during a mid Autumn and predominately in my art studio. I worked from sketches and photographs and occasionally by popping back to the same viewpoint to check on a few details.
