Description
Painting Llandovery Roof Tops was achieved on a small panel with acrylic paint during a late September. The composition shows an Eastern view from Llandovery’s ruined castle mound and which is now adjacent to a car park and just off the A40 road to Brecon.or Carmarthen depending on your direction.
If you can find the car park then you cannot miss seeing the castle mound and its ruined castle tower. When I visited last, there was a shiny and very tall sculpture of a knight in armour on the castle mound too.
I accentuated all the colours to make the picture come alive and to get away from its natural drab colouring.. Many acrylic glazes were used to reach the desired colour effect. I added people and cars to the picture to add more interest.
You can clearly see a thin Medieval street still in existence today. Look slightly to the right of the paintings centre and follow the houses to its middle. You can see how close neighbouring houses are opposite each other.
In the distance and beyond Llandovery town, you can see the Black mountains from the Brecon Beacons National Park. They are coloured in various shades of green and not black. The sky that day was more cheerful looking than usual with a Cerulean blue in parts but with white cloud mainly.
I had not set out to paint Llandovery nor its rooftops. It was an on the spur of the moment decision to do so. I could not paint it at the time of my visit because I had no equipment with me except for a scrap of paper, a biro and a small compact camera. So I sketched a rough composition and took several photos but only choosing one to act as a reference.
With these I made my painting starting that evening from the comfort of my own art studio some 40 miles or so from Llandovery. I had wanted to paint a view of rooftops for some time and I chose to do this one from Llandovery castle's mound because it looked more interesting than other towns I had visited.
