Description
I felt inspired to capture the afternoon light strewn across the swatches of fabulous bluebells in this woodland scene at Llanilar; near to Aberystwyth, Wales, United Kingdom.
By chance, I came across these bluebells and while I was looking for a nearby river scene to paint.
The bright stark white light of the early afternoon sun was strewn across the bluebells. And it was this that attracted me to paint them. Also seeing the light coming down the side of a hill made the vista look even more attractive.
Although it was a sunny mid May day, there was a slight breeze ruffling all flowers and tree foliage. The light seemed to dance not only down the incline of the left bank and mixing with the bluebells but also through the canopy of the many different types of trees. Silver Birch trees are shown mostly.
This woodland seems to be managed as evidenced by the well kept path shown in the picture and the small car parking area at the start of the path. This was a couple of hundred yards behind me when I sketched this scene. The painting was completed from my studio.
Llanilar is a favourite tourist picnic spot in the hills to the East of Aberystwyth near a place called Trawscoed.
It is also visited by local dog walkers but most of the times I have been there, I have had the place to myself. So it does not seem to be an overrun tourist spot. This is probably because not many people know it or cannot find it off the main Aberystwyth road.
The surrounding areas are attractive too but it is the wild bluebell flowers in full bloom that make this place particularly beautiful during May each year. The bluebells seem to be at their best during mid May although visiting at anytime during the month of May would be good.
The bluebell walk runs parallel with a fast moving river the composition of which you can see in my abstract landscape painting entitled Inverted Lights at Trawscoed on this web site.
The original painting is a watercolour on prepared paper. Many layers of paint were applied to achieve the effect shown. Each layer had to be bone dry before the next layer was painted on top.
