Painting - Acrylic On Canvas Panel
Description
I painted this Japanese red maple tree at Talsarn near to Lampeter in Ceredigion, Wales with most of its red leaves intact. A week later strong winds had blown all red leaves off their branches. And soon after that a grounds-man had raked them all up and put them to compost.
It was painted during mid Autumn 2018 on a small canvas panel in artist’s acrylic paint. It’s part of a series of small paintings of the Ceredigion countryside. These comprise views and points of interest that I like and see often. Only a few are paintings of trees.
The red maple tree resides in a private garden of substantial size that belongs to a friend. At the time, I was attracted to the vibrant reds of this tree along with the long dark blue shadows it made on the driveway and caused by the late afternoon sun shining on it. Among the red leaves you can see some orange ones too and as if these have been bleached by the sun.
Similarly, I liked seeing all the red leaves that had dropped already and which were lying on the ground beneath the tree’s canopy. The wind had blown some of these fallen leaves in all directions and making an overall attractive picture all by itself.
In front of this red Japanese maple tree is a small wooden garden bench and this sits on a circular green lawn. The driveway goes right around this lawn in a circle too.
You can also see part of another green lawn in the background and on the right. Behind my red tree is a small yet mature woodland of predominately ancient beech trees - of which some are at least a couple of hundred years old. Most are displaying their Autumn leaf colouring of green, gold, light yellow and orange.
These gardens are where Dylan Thomas is believed to have written “Under Milkwood”. He is believed to have done this just a few yards to the left of where this Japanese maple is growing.
Since completing this painting during October 2019, I have painted a much bigger version but I am not ready to show it yet. In some ways I prefer this smaller version as its capture was spontaneous and completed in one sitting of about three hours.
Only two small paint brushes were used to apply the paint to its canvas panel support.
