Description
Painting a dad with his three Kids in a small boat at Solva in Pembrokeshire Wales was partially achieved in situ with very quick sketches and photographs and then reworked onto a canvas panel in my studio. Acrylic paint was used throughout.
Solva is a small village with its own inlet harbour on the West coast of Pembrokeshire and within the confines of the National park. It is quite popular during the Summer months with tourists and other visitors.
At the time of my visit during one Summer month, I was walking along the quay with a friend when we stopped to watch various activities on the water of which this depiction was one. It was an instant decision to sketch the small white dinghy with a father and his children setting out to presumably catch some fish with a small line.
They were not static for long and so I took a series of bracketed photos with a pocket camera to capture their poses and the top down view of their boat. I had to do this quickly as I did not know these people and I did not want to be an intrusion to their boat fun.
You can see from my boat painting that they were still anchored and moored to the harbour wall. One of the mooring lines was flexing on and under the water and I have tried to capture this movement. This line was attached to another boat further out and not shown within this boat painting.
The little boy in a blue anorak was more interested in looking down into the clear and shallow harbour water and watching something on the sea bed. And among the underwater rocks, stones and seaweed.
The small girl in her pink coat with red hat was more content sitting and looking out to sea. You can see she is sitting near a bucket full of sea water and which is presumably to hold any caught fish. Her small yellow fishing block and line is next to her and the boat’s hull.
Her father was talking to his other daughter and who is partially hidden. You can just see her flowing hair and right shoulder beyond her father’s suede jacket. He, the father, is looking down into the water too and rather like his son in the foreground of my fishing boat painting.
Within the boat, you can clearly see some boating paraphernalia such as green coloured netting, a couple of buoys, some rope and two oars as well as the decking floor.
