Description
Lake Kilarney is part of the Ring of Kerry in South West Eire. This view is near Muckross. It is a simple watercolour painting to illustrate how the light was diffused through the clouds and mist and reflected back off the water. It was captured spontaneously and during one Spring afternoon.
All I had with me at the time was a small box of half pan watercolour paints known as a Bijou box, one sable brush and a block pad of watercolour paper. There was no easel nor anything to sit on.
So instead I used my left arm as an easel and painted my picture of lake Kilarney while standing up. I used bottled spring water too and not water from the lake.
Fast painting techniques were used to capture the seemingly spiritual lighting seeping through the clouds and reflecting back off the water. It was this light that made me to want to paint this simple scene.
There was a mist at the far end of the lake that seemed to want to blend the distant mountains in with the clouds. It was quite difficult trying to judge which were mountains and which were clouds as the colours and lights were similar once all mingled together. Occasionally the mist expanded to cover some of the islands but it did not get as far as me on the Eastern shore.
From my standing position it was impossible to see the full expanse of lake water and so I assumed that the end I could see was actually its end. I did not have any map with me at the time of painting this watercolour of Lake Kilarney. I had a simple road map in the car but its detail did not give a true indication of the lake’s overall size.
The lake had overflowed its banks and had partially taken over the field I was standing in hence seeing a fence post in the water. At first I thought it could be something to do with fishing such as a means to suspend nets from but I could just make out the field grass growing at the bottom of the far and partially submerged post.
