Description
Red Poppies in Cribyn Fields was painted in artist's acrylic paint and overlaid with oil pastel. The scene is real and is situated close to Cribyn along the B4337 near Lampeter in Ceredigion (Cardiganshire), mid West Wales.
The painting’s view overlooks natural and ancient pasture in fields before the hills at Banc Y Moelfre with the viewpoint being just outside Cribyn village and along the start of the Maestir road.
Initially, I painted in simple background colours of blue for the sky and green for the hills and fields. Acrylic paint was used for this first step and this was allowed to dry over a period of days.
The clouds, trees, bushes, hedges, grasses and wild flowers were then added with oil pastel. The two mediums seem to complement each other quite well. The brightness of the oil pastel accentuates points of interest.
The point of a small painting knife was used to shape finer details such as the red poppy heads and their stems as well as the tree branches and their visible trunks. Some grasses were picked out with the same method.
The main distant green hill was blended with oil pastel in places to add light and dark tones. On the right you can also see the hills near the village of Llanwnnen. These are painted in blue to show their distance as being far away.
Most of the fields at the bottom of the hill and shown in the middle of the painting are adorned with buttercups. A rapid pointillism technique was used with oil pastel to create the affect of wild yellow flowers.
The main field and in the foreground before the first line of trees is what attracted me to paint it. The field was at its peak of showing its wild brilliance and was soon to be cut by its farmer for silage. So I decided to paint it on a small panel before that happened.
Many of the grasses were not purely green. Some had a purple streaks whilst others had an orange makeup; they shimmered in the slight breeze. Buttercups mixed with celandines seemed to be everywhere too. The occasional small crop of daisies were partially hidden by the dense grass along with many other tiny flowers.
This original painting would need to be mounted and framed under glass to protect its delicate oil pastel quality.
