Red Poppies in Cribyn Fields was painted in artist's acrylic paint and overlaid with oil pastel. The scene is real and is situated close to Cribyn along the B4337 near Lampeter in Ceredigion (Cardiganshire), mid West Wales.
The painting’s view overlooks natural and ancient pasture in fields before the hills at Banc Y Moelfre with the viewpoint being just outside Cribyn village and along the start of the Maestir road.
Initially, I painted in simple background colours of blue for the sky and green for the hills and fields. Acrylic paint was used for this first step and this was allowed to dry over a period of days.
The clouds, trees, bushes, hedges, grasses and wild flowers were then added with oil pastel. The two mediums seem to complement each other quite well. The brightness of the oil pastel accentuates points of interest.
