Description
Cors Caron bulrushes with purple grasses was painted on panel with acrylic paints. Cors Caron is a nature reserve also known as Tregaron Bog. It is believed to be Europe's oldest peat bog. My acrylic painting captured the later afternoon sun during a mid to late Spring when new tree leaf growth was starting to thicken. Bulrushes with purple, mauve and cream coloured grasses are its main theme.
Of course, the grasses were not really as coloured and as shown within the painting. Instead various purple colours were identified to be used as the main grass colouring with mauve as shadows and cream for older grass from previous seasons.
Red, purple and mauve was used to create the woodlands beneath the new tree canopy. You can see faces and other identifiable patterns that appeared without any conscious effort from me. They just appeared as they often do within many of my paintings. Most of these are shown within and just in front of the tree line.
Beyond the woodland on the right you can see the top of a hill shown in blue with swatches of a reddish orange on its top and sides to depict the dying sunlight.
In between the purple grasses and the woodland is a stretch of rough natural land comprising mounds of dead grass and predominately painted in various hues of complementary yellow and orange and with a hint of green in places.
Silver birch trees in the foreground were actually at this real Cors Caron scene and were painted in to seemingly throw the woodlands further back into the composition and so give the painting a better depth and a pseudo three dimensional quality.
The actual area is not an area that you can walk in safely nor legally. The area is protected by fencing for the sake of the natural animals that live amongst the grass mounds. My viewpoint to capture this scene was from a designated pathway. Signage warning of snakes and especially the venomous Adder is enough to put off most people from traversing into this waterlogged area.
Thousands of single brush strokes were made to show the individual grass blades that I wanted to demonstrate. These were made with a small brush.
