Description
My Moel Famau Hill Painting was made with many layers of acrylic paint on stretched canvas. It was quite a tricky painting to do as the daylight kept changing rapidly and so did the natural colours.
The sky alternated between being relatively clear with a nice looking Cobalt blue to being quite overcast with predominately white clouds. But the clouds still allowed the daylight to penetrate them as I have tried to show. This natural brightness seemed to make the landscape below a few shades darker and slightly more prominent as a result.
The two conditions of light and dark seem to illustrate well within this Moel Famau Hill painting.
The hill itself involved painting many layers of different colours to obtain the darker colour you can see now. And each layer had to dry before the next one was applied.
The colours for the hill part of Moel Famau are less intense to depict distance than those in the middle and foreground area of this painting.
For the bottom half of the painting showing the lush green field, stone wall and grass in front of the same wall, I used a different painting technique involving thicker paint and which I mixed while still wet and directly onto the canvas.
There is a short time space to work the paint in this manner because acrylic paints dry very quickly and in a matter of minutes. I could have added a retarding gel to inhibit the paint’s fast drying time but I prefer to paint without additives and just a hint of water to loosen the pigment binders.
The original painting was commissioned by a private buyer from Mold in North Wales but I retained the rights to make and sell prints from it. At the moment, it is one of my best selling prints on FineArt America.
Moel Famau translates from Welsh to "Hill of the Mothers". It is part of the Clwydian hill range in North Wales and is classified as an area of outstanding natural beauty. Its approximate 550 metre or I,800 feet peak overlooks the counties of Denbighshire and Flintshire. Both these counties are in North Wales.
You can approach Moel Famau hill from Offa’s Dyke path and the many tracks around it or if you’re less adventurous you can drive along the A494 between Ruthin and Mold and perhaps see it from there.
