Description
Painting Carew castle turret steps was technically a very difficult medieval castle picture to do as there were different vanishing points to capture. And I wanted to make it look as realistic as possible; so that it looks obvious on what it is meant to be and without knowing its title.
Two principal views are offered either by looking down the complete spiral stone stairwell or glancing off half way down to the archway and up the stone steps beyond.
I used modified oil paints that use water instead of solvents. This was my first painting using this type of oil paint. And I like using them as they are very similar to using traditional oil paints. Even typical oils for adding to the pigment, like linseed oil, have been modified for using water instead of solvent. Similarly various solvents have been modified for water mixing usage too.
I prefer them to traditional oils because they don’t smell of solvents but I still prefer using acrylics for the majority of my paintings. Acrylics do not have a pungent smell at all.
For this castle spiral steps painting I used paint straight from the tube and without adding any additional modified oils or indeed modified solvents. It was just pure pigment and which was quite easy to apply with a selection of small brushes.
The original painting is purposely not big because I did not want to waste either the support it is painted on nor any modified oil paints through any mistakes.
Getting an accurate under-drawing in graphite onto the panel was a little tricky as the panel involved stretched canvas glued to it and canvas in itself is difficult to draw upon.
So I worked out all the vanishing points and perspectives first on paper of the same dimensions to that of the panel. Then I transferred these marks in feint pencil to the panel.
These were then sealed with an oil wash to prevent future smudging from the graphite pencil.
The original overall colour of the steps and walls is a drab green-grey. For my painting I changed the colours to create a nicer atmosphere and which still look plausible and are kinder to the eye.
My Carew Castle turret steps painting has a hidden meaning to it and is metaphorical. You can read about this intended meaning within my blog of the same name and on this site.
