Description
Cwm Mynach Farm Boundary Brook is an abstract painting of a natural scene showing a brook flowing under a canopy of tree foliage along the B4337 near Cribyn, Lampeter, Ceredigion, Wales. The term Cwm Mynach is Welsh meaning Valley of the Monk.
I lived on this farm for many years and I would walk my dog occasionally to this brook. It was best visited in mid summer to see it in deep shadow.
Despite its boldness, it was a nice and calm place to visit and especially on a hot day as the dense tree leaves helped to cool the air underneath and the running brook made gentle music.
The brook flowed into a Ford which was used by people, animals and farm vehicles to move from one field to another via their respective gates.
The thick foliage was supplied by trees and bushes and which both cast dark shadows over the brook. This accentuated the light which had managed to punch through gaps in the leaf canopy overhead.
The light then fell onto specific leaves and seemingly danced on the moving water. Some of this light was then reflected back and up onto the tree trunks and branches.
I chose to paint this scene as an abstract with a natural theme. I took the main colour from each coloured object, such as a leaf or a blade of grass, and used it as an overall colour for that object.
I decided to use colour straight from their tubes and without any purposeful mixing on a palette. This helped to give the painting its abstract appeal as well as making it more striking with yellow, blue, green, blue, red, black and white.
The stark looking daylight beyond the silhouetted trees and bushes helped to make the focal points of the brook and surrounding vegetation look even darker. For this reason I chose to use black pigment in more than one layer.
In addition to seeing bold leaf colouring, you can also see some ground fauna and especially in the foreground where yellow grasses and red flowers are evident. There is also a small broken branch lying on the mound with yellow grasses. This is shown in black.
The painting was created in one sitting and with no under-drawing to act as a guideline. It was painted with acrylic paint on a small panel.
