Description
Tenby is a coastal town in South Pembrokeshire, Wales on the Western side of Carmarthen Bay. Tenby is known in Welsh as Dinbych-y-Pysgod. Its literal translation is, "Little Town of the Fishes" or "Little Fortress of the Fish".
It is a popular seaside town and is a great place to be whatever the season. Tenby is one of my favourite coastal and harbour towns. I enjoy painting it in artist’s acrylic on canvas or panel. The various harbour scenes hold my interest long enough, to want to paint them. I used to go to primary school a few hundred yards from this scene as I lived in a nearby village.
Tenby is steeped in history too with medieval and Venetian influences. Most of the old town is still wrapped behind castle walls from the 13th Century.
The viewpoint of my painting is from the far side of the quay along Pier Hill and looking back over the bobbing boats towards the small harbour beach and ancient blue coloured house and St. Julian’s Church with the latter being just beyond a harbour wall on the right hand side.
The background houses are situated between Penniless Cove Hill and Bridge Street.
Although it is a small painting I wanted to include as much detail as I could hence being able to see ladders and steps on the harbour wall plus the mooring lines for the small fishing and pleasure boats. It is quite common to see local children plus their parents playing on the beach and I included them too. I used to play there myself many years ago.
I painted the boats as seen because that is often how they are moored and I particularly liked how your eye is drawn over the collection and further back into the picture. The sea was painted in two predominate colours to shown reflected light on the gentle waves as the tide was going out.
I accentuated all colours within my painting from their true colouring because that is how I like to paint. Of course much of Tenby has changed since my time there during the 1960’s although the infrastructure of its buildings are still about the same.
Other paintings of Tenby which I have done are available and three are shown on this site.
