Description
My Purple Heather Cilcennin Ceredigion Welsh Art Landscape painting was achieved over a series of consecutive days in acrylic paint on a canvas stretched and glued over a rigid panel.
The composition shows many clumps of purple heather flowers amongst groups of various green grasses and in front of a small managed copse of predominately fir trees. All this is situated upon a hill above Cilcennin and near Tal-sarn in Ceredigion. The approach road to this colourful scene is the B4337. The woodland is called Nantcwnlle.
The composition is to one side of an obvious forestry vehicle track right at the top of the hill. I was attracted to this scene because of the summer flowering heathers; purple heather and pink heather mainly.
In addition, I liked the gap in the trees and which highlighted an inner woodland area that was bathed in bright sunlight. Replicating this gave my painting more depth.
The sunlight clipped various overgrown bushes making them appear to be golden in colour. You can see this on the upper mid left of my painting. Also you can see some golden lights in the fir tree above the said bush.
Purple heathers in Wales appear to be a common heath plant. They are plentiful in Ceredigion and especially in and around the more wild parts and intersected by forestry; whether managed or wild.
Rather than painting this Welsh art landscape accurately and akin to a photograph, I decided to use my own impressionistic style in order the capture the spontaneity of the moment - with this being how the natural light made each colour come alive and get noticed with its own right to be seen.
The initial part of the painting was hastily made in situ to layout the composition and to capture the lights and colours as I saw them. The detail was finished in my art studio some five miles away. I went back on occasions to check some details with the excuse of walking my dog.
Since finishing this painting, an art critic thought it had a Monet appeal. If it does then that was purely coincidental as all I set out to do was to paint it in my own style of impressionism. Although I do admire some of Monet’s work.
The painting was eventually sold to a private art collector who framed it and displays it in her drawing room.
