Description
Painting Merlin's Hill at Abergwili overlooking the river Towy at Carmarthen was created with acrylic paints on canvas during a late October afternoon and on the cusp of dusk.
Merlin’s hill was originally an Iron age hill fort circa 400 BC and which principally surveyed a flat plain with distant hills towards Llanelli and Swansea or that is what my picture shows. Looking in other directions shows less interesting scenes and not worthy of painting..
Within my painting, you can see that the river Towy twists and turns towards the distant hills. The pinkish orange glare over the hills on the right of the painting is the glare from distant street lights and presumably from Llanelli first and then Swansea.
This would be about 20 kilometres away from the paintings viewpoint. The glare is not a sunset nor indeed a sun rise. A compass direction would most likely show South South East.
There were quite a few trees and bushes masking my view and so I did not paint them in. If I had included them then you would not see the scene as shown.
I didn’t want to pay specific attention to detail hence preferring to paint block buildings in the foreground and below Merlin’s hill that I was standing upon.
I wanted to capture the distance so that your eyes look into painting and perhaps follow the Towy river to the horizon and while savouring the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside.
The group of my block buildings represent the village of White Mill and a service station with some vehicles along the A40.
A few other houses and farms are shown further into the painting with similar and simple detail.
Their placement is fairly accurate along with the various trees and bushes that make up the vista. The shape of the hills plus their contours is relatively correct too.
Merlin’s Hill at Abergwili is not that easy to locate without a good map or a satellite navigation system.
The working farm that manages the land is believed to be called Alltyfyrddin. Here you should see the designated Merlin’s Hill Centre building. And from there you need to walk to Bryn Myrddin and which is a short distance away. After that you should follow the trails. Be aware though that the terrain is not only steep but rough too. It is not really suitable for those not fit.
