Description
Painting Afon Wyre Llanrhystud Aberystwyth Ceredigion started off as a sketch with watery acrylics on watercolour paper and expanded over a few hours into an abstract painting with thicker paint.
The painting shows a small part of the river Wyre under a canopy of trees at Dole and close to the village of Llanrhystud.
The view is from the river’s Rhyd or Ford and which is a shallow part to allow traffic to cross it without the need for driving over a road bridge.
There is a pedestrian bridge adjacent to it with wooden railings. It overlooks this Ford and was the place where I stood to capture my initial river picture sketch. I took a few reference photographs too and especially to obtain the ever changing sunlight.
I felt inspired to capture the diminishing sunset light leaking through gaps in the foliage above the river and from the trees and bushes that surround it on both banks.
This created the dark shadows and dappled light you can see on the river water and on some of the permanent rocks and tumbled boulders illustrated in the foreground.
The Afon Wyre river/stream runs parallel to the B4337 road and under the A487 road at Llanryhstud and quite close to The Black Lion pub on the opposite side.
My painting’s view is about 350 yards from this A487 road. It can also be approached from Dole itself along the same A487 road and as if you were driving from an Aberystwyth direction.
But the Ford itself is no longer traversable by vehicles for reasons unknown. It was closed by the local council authorities some time ago.
There are now gates in front of it along the B4337 to deter most people from using it as a quick short-cut to by pass Llanrhystud village and to get onto the main coastal road to Aberystwyth.
However, you can still visit on foot although there is nothing spectacular to see with regards to this river except for how the light reflects off it and especially at the time of an interesting looking sunset although that in itself is subjective.
Llanrhystud village is worth visiting though as there is plenty to explore there.
