Description
Painting Marloes Sands beach in Pembrokeshire South Wales was achieved with artist’s quality watercolour on presoaked and slightly stretched watercolour paper of an adequate weight.
Sketches and photographs were taken on site on a warm day during summertime and these were then used to make the final painting back in my studio.
It was completed in one session of a few undisturbed hours. A couple of watercolour washes were used to get the overall effect I wanted to achieve and predominately for the sky, sea and sand.
The detail for the rocks and distant vegetation was applied with a slightly moist sable brush along with some rock detail on the sand. The palette of colours was kept to a minimum to keep all in harmony. All colours were enhanced with an emphasis on light.
At the time of my visiting Marloes to do this painting the sea was relatively calm with just small waves. The tide was going out. You can see large rectangular puddles of sea water on the beach yet to drain away or to evaporate.
Marloes Sands is a beautiful unspoiled beach hidden away between the villages of St. Brides and Dale; all within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park. The nearest big town is at Milford Haven; just a few miles to the East. The way to the beach is signposted from Marloes village.
The feint island in the distance is a nature reserve called Skokholm. You can just see it above the last jut of mainland known as Gateholm. In my picture, this cuts from the right to the centre left.
Fortunately Marloes Sands rarely gets overcrowded because it is off the beaten track and it is not easy to reach.
Its final approach involves walking down a steep path, from the headland, comprising a mix of sand and compacted mud in dry weather. At the best of times you need to be sure footed.
On occasions it is visited by a few geologists for its rocks and fossils.
The beach and surrounding areas are managed by the National Trust. If you plan on swimming or surfing along this coastline then it is wise to check the tides and to know where the dangerous rip tides frequent.
