Description
Llanina woods are opposite Llanina Mansion with St. Ina’s church in its grounds; all are situated on the edge of Cei Bach beach near the village of Llanarth and close to New Quay along Cardigan Bay in West Wales.
This watercolour painting captures the freshwater Afon Gido river that passes through the Llanina woods and under the stone road bridge and into the Irish sea some 200 yards further on.
Llanina woods are known as Coed Llanina in Welsh.
A mix of blue wild flowers grow along the river banks during the Summer months; as shown in my watercolour painting. The Quay West Holiday Park is close by.
The sunlight captured in this painting has a certain bleaching effect but in reality it did allow me to see what was on the river bed below the peat coloured water and this detail has been included in the foreground.
There was nothing of any particular interest on the river bed except for slabs of stone and smaller rocks. Further along the river on the left and close to the stone bridge there is one large slab of stone that resembles a wash stone when perhaps clothing was laundered in the river. Wet clothing might have been bashed against this stone to help remove any dirt.
At the time of sketching this scene I had my back to a collection of small building ruins at Llanina and which date back to 1770 according to an inscription found on a principal ruined building and which seems to be an ancient Mill house.
I was standing on a small path that runs along side the river on the left bank and behind a collection of the ruined buildings with no roofing.
The whole area including the woodlands replicated in this watercolour is now managed by Welsh Water.
They are many different types of mature trees including Beech, Horse Chestnut, Sycamore and Ash. Many of these trees look to be at least a hundred years old or more.
I completed my Llanina Woods Mansion New Quay Wales Painting with artist quality watercolour on 320 gsm paper over a period of two days.
At the scene I made various sketches and took photos to capture the lighting effects of the late Summer afternoon. From these prompts, I started and finished this painting in my studio. It was then framed under picture glass.
