Eilean Donan is a famous Scottish castle located on its own small tidal island in the North West Highlands of Scotland and close to the Isle of Skye. Often, it is incorrectly referred as the Kyle of Lochalsh and which is a few miles further away. The village of Dornie is the closest to it.
Eilean Donan has appeared in many photographic publications and in particular films and television. I imagined that it would be much bigger in size and more foreboding than it actually is, for real. I visited for the first time in 2007 and I went during a late afternoon. The light by then had turned to a misty yellow and reddish orange colour due to the imminent sunset. It was quite a warm day.
At the time, I had a limited pallet of paint comprising the three primaries and white to mix my own colours. The actual mixing was done directly onto the painting.
