The flying ace - sopwith camel art painting was made with mixed media although it is principally a watercolour painting on paper of a substantial weight to prevent buckling from the many washes of diluted pigment applied to it during its painting process.
The clouds and landscape below were achieved with a watercolour sponging technique.
This involved applying blue and burnt umber pigment washes, with a brush, to make a bluish grey and allowing them to partially dry before taking off parts with a small piece of damp sponge.
This resulted in parts of the white paper to show through thus allowing realistic looking clouds to form on the paper. It sounds easy but in practice it can be quite difficult to achieve in taking off just the right amount of pigment.
