Description
My Scottish castle painting of Eilean Donan is on a large stretched canvas and was painted with ultra heavy bodied acrylics to achieve a desired impasto effect. Only one painting knife was used to apply the paint. No brushes were used at all. Colour was applied straight from respective tubes and directly onto the canvas and with no premixing beforehand. You can quite clearly see my painting knife marks displayed within the thick paint.
After sizing the canvas a couple of times with acrylic gesso, I made a quick sketch with charcoal onto the blank canvas as a placement reference for the castle, bridge, foreground rocks and distant hills.
Next I painted prominent shadow areas using burnt umber and dark blue pigment to the castle, its bridge and foreground rocks. Both colours were applied wet so that they mixed directly on the canvas as nearly one colour.
After that I painted in the mid tones of predominately burnt sienna and once this layer was semi dry I added various hues of red, green and yellow ochre. For the roof tops I applied dark blue and a hint of white over burnt umber to replicate its seemingly slate roofing.
The hills or mountains were painted with a mix of Cobalt and Ultramarine blue and before these were quite dry I added red and with some yellow to make orange highlights. For the distant mountain on the left I added white and then scraped it off to produce a mauve effect.
I then painted in the sky with the same colours used for the castle. I did the same too for the loch water.
The green vegetation for the grasses below the castle and the bushes along the bridge and for the distant hill on the right was quite tricky to get the desired colouring as the green used straight from the tube was too intense and did not look right. So I had to dampen its intensity with yellow and white. I made my own blacks by using Ultramarine blue and a hint of burnt umber.
I did the same for the greenery growing on the foreground rocks and for the reflected greens in the water below the bridge.
The final marks I made to the painting were dabs and scrapes of pure red to the castle and its bridge plus the foreground rocks. The latter rock tops were accentuated with white and yellow mixed directly onto the canvas.
The Eilean Donan Castle is an internationally well known Scottish fortress or fortified house. It is situated in the Western Highlands quite close to the Isle of Skye. It is often misspelt as the Eileen Donan and sometimes incorrectly referred as the “Kyle of Localsh”; which is a few miles further away. The village of Dornie is the closest to it.
According to historic evidence the island on which Eilean Donan sits was probably first inhabited around the late 7th century The castle seen today has been rebuilt a few times since first established during the 13th century. It then offered a perfect defensive position initially against Viking raiders and subsequently between feuding Scottish clans.
