Description
Eilean Donan is a famous Scottish castle located on its own small tidal island in the North West Highlands of Scotland and close to the Isle of Skye. Often, it is incorrectly referred as the Kyle of Lochalsh and which is a few miles further away. The village of Dornie is the closest to it.
Eilean Donan has appeared in many photographic publications and in particular films and television. I imagined that it would be much bigger in size and more foreboding than it actually is, for real. I visited for the first time in 2007 and I went during a late afternoon. The light by then had turned to a misty yellow and reddish orange colour due to the imminent sunset. It was quite a warm day.
At the time, I had a limited pallet of paint comprising the three primaries and white to mix my own colours. The actual mixing was done directly onto the painting.
I completed my painting of this famous Scottish fortress in one sitting of about two to three hours of continual work. No brushes were used in making this impasto painting; only one painting knife. The painting’s ground or support is on a small canvas board.
You can quite clearly see my painting knife marks displayed within the thick paint.
I moved the sun’s setting location to suit the composition better and to make the castle look darker as if in partial silhouette. The sea loch’s water reflected the light back onto the castle’s walls hence not showing a full dark shadow. The true compositional view is a Southern one.
Images of this Eilean Donan painting have appeared in various promotional publications.
I have done a much larger version on stretched canvas and in different colours and using the same impasto techniques. You can see this other painting of this famous Scottish castle on this site but due to site restrictions I cannot supply a direct link to it.
According to historic evidence the island on which Eilean Donan sits was probably first inhabited around the late 7th century The castle seen today has been rebuilt a few times since first established during the 13th century. It then offered a perfect defensive position initially against Viking raiders and subsequently between feuding Scottish clans.
