Description
This aerial view of Carew Castle in Pembrokeshire, Wales was achieved by flying over it several times in a Cessna light aircraft at about 1,000 feet above it. Fortunately, I was not the pilot! The green backdrop is actually one of the many ends of the Milford Haven estuary and not sky.
My view was hampered by low wisps of cloud. In the end, I resorted to taking many digital photos from a compact camera which I take with me when my pilot (a client and friend) takes me flying over the Welsh countryside.
Hence having to fly around the castle several times to sketch it and to take many photos; from which to make the resultant artwork back in my studio.
The aircraft cockpit was cramped and which made sketching the castle quite difficult. My knees were up by my ears seemingly as it was impossible to get my long legs under the low cockpit dashboard.
I wanted to show the castle in its entirety rather than just a face-on part of it although I have since painted parts of the castle’s medieval interior; such as one of its towers’ spiral turret steps and a stone staircase in shadow and leading up to the Medieval banqueting hall. All these mentioned paintings are on this site.
Carew Castle is located in Carew near Milton on the A477. The access road is actually on the A4075 and is signposted although it is quite obvious to see it from either road.
Building the castle from local stone started around the 1200’s and continued to the 14th Century. Its location had a strategic element to it.
I love visiting castles and there are many medieval castles in Wales but not all are as complete as Carew castle.
Carew castle, as it stands now, is quite drab looking with weathered limestone and so I chose to lighten the colours to make it more visually appealing. I used artist’s acrylic paint throughout.
The colours of the Tudor stone window frames are similar to the colours I used to paint this castle on panel. The castle’s window frames were made from imported Cotswold stone and so rather akin to a light yellow ochre colouring.
The castle is privately owned by the Carew family but its current administration is leased by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park.
